  16. <p>Rollins claims his tale of vote suppression was just an empty
  17. boast

  19. <p>     This time Ed Rollins swore he was telling the truth. His earlier
  20. contention that the Republican Party had doled out $500,000
  21. to suppress the black vote in New Jersey's gubernatorial election
  22. had been a political boast, he said last week, concocted as
  23. a "head game" with his rival political strategist, James Carville.
  24. That was Rollins' explanation last week for earlier remarks
  25. that had touched off a furor following Republican Christine
  26. Todd Whitman's narrow victory over incumbent Democrat James
  27. Florio.

  29. <p>     Interrogated for seven hours on Friday by lawyers for the Democratic
  30. National Committee, Rollins said he was stunned by the reaction
  31. to his earlier remarks. "Obviously, if I thought it was going
  32. to be a national story, I would not have taken a gun and put
  33. it to my head and blown my career apart," he said. His shame
  34. over the scandal has been so overwhelming, in fact, that he
  35. has thought about killing himself: "It's to a point where I've--you know, I thought of putting a gun to my head."

  37. <p>     Over breakfast with reporters on Nov. 9, Rollins had asserted
  38. that black ministers and Democratic workers were paid to keep
  39. black turnout low. Democrats, who have filed a lawsuit asking
  40. to invalidate the election, acknowledged that the Rollins deposition
  41. failed to provide a smoking gun but vowed to keep fighting.
  42. Said Democratic state committee chairman Raymond Lesniak: "I
  43. am not going to drop our investigation based on his bizarre
  44. explanation." Federal and state criminal probes are under way
  45. as well.
